Our bodies ached from the exertion. Our
desperation neared the point of
hopelessness. Could we hold back the
unstoppable wall of water?
Sally and Harry had
called earlier that day from their
family farm in eastern Colorado.
Hearing the storm warnings for the Fort
Collins area, they worried about the
safety of the townhome we had built for
them the previous year. We too worried
as the rains continued to pound Fort
Collins. Knowing their townhouse was
vacant, we had checked on it several
times during the day. With night
falling and the storms intensifying, we
returned, traveling through flooded
streets, armed only with raincoats,
buckets and towels.
We raced to check their basement
and, to our horror, saw a wall of water
threatening to shatter the glass and
flood the lower floor. We each took a
window well, bailing feverishly between
flashes of lightning, until we could
inch the windows open enough to bail
from the inside. Filling wastebaskets
with rainwater from the window well, we
dashed down the hallway and emptied
them in the bathtub and commode. After
an hour and a half, shaking from
exhaustion and fearing defeat, we heard
the rain begin to ease.
It was after midnight before the
storm subsided, and we were able to
leave. The deluge had dumped fourteen
inches of rain in two hours.
Leaving their townhome, we heard the
roar of rushing water and got our first
glimpse of the damage to our community.
Torrents of water raced through
buildings, down roads, and through open
areas, spreading out to form unfamiliar
lakes and ponds. Concerned about our
own family and home, we picked our way
through flooded streets and impassable
bridges, arriving home to find an
answering machine filled with messages
from distraught clients.
We prioritized the message list and
developed a plan. Dawn found us calling
each of them, assessing damage, renting
pumping equipment and fans, and
reserving carpet-cleaners for our
homeowners. We organized college
students to help move wet boxes and
calm fears in the subdivision. Our
trade contractors were by our side,
helping to reinforce window wells and
to re-establish drainage patterns.
Looking back on that frightening
day, we were fortunate to be able to
help where we could. We rarely confront
events of such
magnitude.
Yet, our reaction to our owners'
call for help was just as natural as
our homeowners' confidence in our
ability and our accessibility to listen
and to aid. Throughout the building
process, our homeowners learn to count
on us for support and guidance. We
listen. We respond. We assist them
during the construction of their home
in every way possible.
Our staff is trained to work with
each of our clients in this very
personal way. Each person at Spanjer
Homes is an integral component
of a well-coordinated and hard working
team, a reflection of the

revising procedures and policies, our
staff continues to share and refine the

shared experiences and values help us
